Who Are We
Cruising Kids is a black-owned tutoring company that provides high-quality literacy tutoring and education for students living in the urban community, grades K-10.
Why Are We Necessary
About 50% of New York City students are reading below grade level; this is due to the lack of explicit reading instruction during early grades. As students enter the third grade they are no longer focusing on learning how to read, they are reading to learn (comprehension).
Even when students struggle, teachers are encouraged to move forward with the hope that students will catch up. While some students are able to catch up, many are not; this causes a student to become academically and socially insecure. Lack of mastery in literacy skills can also cause negative parent and child interactions in the home.
Our Mission
Our mission is to close the achievement gap among urban students in the areas of literacy and academic mastery. We accomplish this by:
- providing high quality, researched based, tutoring resources for tutoring
- addressing the core components of literacy, enabling students to acquire reading and writing proficiency and position students for overall success
- assessing students often to identity present levels and next steps
- facilitating workshops and sharing resources to families to help students at home

Who We Assist
Students who benefit from our services are those who are reading below grade-level and seek to obtain the skills necessary to access various texts at grade level and beyond. We also work with students who seek to maintain current literacy skills, those who seek mastery of literacy skills, and those who want a challenge.
Through our explicit reading instruction and building of skills, students are easily able to transfer and apply skills to all subjects including English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies/ Global History, and other subjects. More importantly, students benefit from the skills and confidence they need for life.
How We Assist
Phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension are the five main reading components we target to ensure students are accessing content and thriving in all subjects. Additionally, Cruising Kids offers coaching for students who need support in the following areas: organizational skills, study skills, time management skills, and digital literacy skills these skills set students up for success both in school and in life.
We also help build a healthy support community for our students by equipping their parents, guardians, and teachers. Parents of our clients receive access to educational and social/emotional workshops that enable them to prevent and restore negative relationships they once had before their children experienced academic setbacks. Teachers of our clients are empowered to easily identify student improvement as students access various content more easily, saving them time and allowing them to focus on higher-level educational objectives for their students.
